Many visitors assume Thai islands all have the same weather. They don't. Koh Samui is on the east side of the peninsula, in the sheltered Gulf of Thailand, with a different rhythm from Phuket, Krabi and the Andaman coast.
The practical consequence: when western Thailand is at its wettest (broadly May to October), Samui is often relatively dry — one of the reasons it's a strong summer-holiday choice while Phuket is soggy. Conversely, Samui's heaviest rain comes late in the year, especially October and November. Book by Samui's calendar, not the mainland's.

January
The tail of the wet season early on, drying out as the month goes on. The second half is often lovely, and it's a good-value shoulder before the February peak.
February — the best month
Statistically the driest month of the year on Samui, with the least rainfall, plenty of sunshine, calm seas and slightly cooler air than March–April. If you want the most reliable weather, this is it.
March
Warm, dry and bright, with blue skies most days and calm seas. A close second to February and excellent for families, water sports and sailing.
April
Hot and mostly dry — the warmest stretch begins. Great beach weather; just plan shade and hydration, especially with young children. Songkran (Thai New Year, mid-April) is a fun, very wet festival to be aware of.
May – September
Warm and humid with occasional short, heavy showers that usually pass quickly. Because Samui misses the south-west monsoon, this is often a genuinely good and better-value time to visit while much of Thailand is wetter — popular with European summer-holiday families in July and August.
October
Rain increases as the retreating monsoon approaches. Still workable early in the month, but less reliable; green landscapes and full waterfalls are the upside.
November — the wettest month
The peak of the wet season and the month most people avoid for a beach holiday, with the heaviest rainfall and the roughest seas. Rain tends to come in intense bursts rather than all day, and prices are at their lowest — but reliable beach time is not guaranteed.
December
Drying out and increasingly pleasant, building to the festive peak. Christmas and New Year are beautiful but the busiest and most expensive dates of the year — book well ahead.
