How the Automated Observer Works
Every daylight hour, Mandarin Beach Villa’s fixed beachfront camera is sampled for a short window and several frames are drawn from that footage. An automated visual observer classifies what is visible in those frames using a fixed vocabulary — the sea surface, the exposed sand, the observed waterline, visible litter and natural debris, and how clearly the scene could be seen — and writes a short observation in plain words.
Each observation is validated before it is published. It is given an observation ID, timestamped, kept with one supporting frame and its stated limitations, compared with the previous observation, and filed in the public archive by day and by month. An hour whose footage cannot be assessed is recorded as unavailable; nothing is ever carried forward from an earlier hour, and nothing is published before the service began.
The vocabulary is deliberately observational. The observer says rippled and no breaking waves observed, not “wave activity: low”; it says none obvious, not “none detected”. It records what the camera shows, and keeps that separate from what anyone might conclude from it.

On the afternoon of 16 September the sky over Lipa Noi turned heavy and the sea freshened. Ong, our gardener, went out to the beachfront to clear washed-up material and care for the sand in front of the villa. The webcam images below were taken that afternoon.
Our published record for that day tells the rest honestly. The camera is sampled once an hour in daylight, so material that washes up and is cleared between two readings never reaches the record — and every reading on 16 September, the last at 17:50, recorded no obvious litter and no significant natural debris. We publish what the camera saw, not what we would like it to have shown.
When the observer does record washed-up material, the system acts on it. The reading raises a task for the gardener and an open action on the villa dashboard, and a later clear reading the same day closes it. That is what happened the day before: on 15 September the camera recorded possible seaweed or natural debris near the waterline at 12:50, 13:50 and 14:50, and by the 15:50 reading the sand was recorded clear again. Every one of those observations is public, each with its own dated frame.

What the Camera Can — and Cannot — Establish
The camera shows one fixed view of the beach directly in front of Mandarin Beach Villa, in daylight. That is what the record covers, and no more.

- Calmest, clearest water: the west coast is sheltered from the north-east monsoon that brings surf to the east-coast beaches (Chaweng, Lamai) around November to December, so the sea in front of the villa is typically at its calmest and clearest through the dry months.
- Best time to see the fleet: the Hobie Cat catamaran, kayaks and paddleboards are usually brought onto the sand in calm morning and late-afternoon conditions, so those are the windows most likely to show the adventure equipment on the beach. Is the webcam available at night and 24 hours a day?
Yes. The Mandarin Beach Villa webcam is a continuous 24/7 live stream. The beach, sea and sky are clearest in daylight, and the west-facing view is at its most striking around sunset, roughly between 18:00 and 19:00 Thailand time depending on the season. At night there is naturally less to see, but the stream stays live so you can check conditions at any hour.
How do I know the webcam is genuinely live and not a recorded loop?
The feed is a low-latency live HLS video stream, and the view carries a live Thailand (ICT) clock and the beach coordinates on screen, so the time and place update as you watch. You will also see conditions change in real time — the tide, the light, passing boats and the weather — which a looped or stock video cannot show. The on-page tide and weather panel is drawn from the same live local feed.
How is the beach observed?
Every daylight hour, 07:00 to 18:00 Thailand time, Mandarin Beach Villa's fixed beachfront camera is sampled and an automated visual observer records what is visible in the frames: the sea surface, exposed sand, observed waterline, visible litter and natural debris, and visibility. Each validated observation is published with its time, observation ID, supporting frame and stated limitations, and filed in the public archive at mandarinbeachvilla.com/beach-observations/. An hour whose footage cannot be assessed is recorded as unavailable, never filled in from an earlier hour.
What is the Beach Record?
The Beach Record is Mandarin Beach Villa's public, timestamped record of the beach in front of the villa at Lipa Noi, built from the hourly observations. It shows the most recent validated observation with its supporting frame, states the month to date in counts of what was observed, and links to every day and month in the archive. The Mandarin Beach Villa beach record is an automated visual record from a fixed camera, not a water-quality test, a tide measurement or a swimming-safety assessment.
Does Mandarin’s webcam show conditions at other Lipa Noi villas?
