Yes. A listing’s “last updated” date and the age of its photographs are two different facts, and a platform recording one tells you nothing reliable about the other. A listing can be edited today while every photograph on it was published years ago.
Most listing platforms timestamp the page as a whole, not each element on it individually. A host can adjust a price, correct a description, respond to a review, or update availability without ever touching the photo gallery. From the platform’s point of view, the listing has been updated. From a traveller’s point of view, nothing about the photographs has changed at all. The two events — editing the page and refreshing the photographs — are entirely independent actions, and doing one does not require doing the other.
A listing timestamp describes an editing event on a platform’s database. Photo provenance describes where a specific image file came from and how long it has been in circulation. Confusing the two leads to an easy mistake: assuming an actively maintained listing must also have actively maintained photography. Maintenance of the text and maintenance of the images are separate, and only checking the photographs directly tells you about the second one.
Where a villa is marketed by an agency or property manager rather than the owner directly, the same professionally shot photograph set is frequently reused across multiple seasons, and sometimes across multiple listing platforms simultaneously. Commissioning a new photography set has a real cost, so it is common practice — and not inherently a problem — for an image set to remain in use well beyond the year it was taken, particularly where the property has not changed materially since.

Even where an older photograph is entirely accurate, a traveller booking a high-value stay may reasonably still want current confirmation — particularly for details that commonly change over time, such as furniture, landscaping, appliances or recent renovation work. Requesting a dated current photograph or a live video walkthrough resolves this directly, without needing to make any assumption about whether the existing photographs are still accurate.
